THE MISSION OF OGWELL COMMUNITY HUB LTD

To reinstate and run an economically viable and sustainable village shop owned and managed by the community, for the benefit of the community.

The shop will provide an attractive, welcoming and valued focal point for the village, servicing and actively supporting the community and its visitors.

The first steps towards rebuilding the village's lost assets.

Having lost both our village shop and village pub over the years there is a serious need to address the lack of local services.

Abbotsridge Drive Village Shop

With the agreement of the current owner, we intend to buy the entire property for the benefit of the community. The shop has been vacant now for a decade and is in need of some TLC but given its proximity to Canada Hill Primary School - and being on the more populated side of the hill we believe it presents a viable prospect of success.

The Jolly Sailor

Whilst Heavitree Brewery are in active discussions with a range of national and consultees and the local authority regarding the future of the Jolly Sailor premises, it is highly likely that redevelopment will be a long-term activity. Whilst there is large enough space to establish a shop and good-sized café in a rebuilt building, due to timing we view this opportunity as a later phase of our project and that success with the Abbotsridge Shop is the priority.

Locally Owned

Owned and run by the community

A DISTINCTIVE WAY OF RUNNING A BUSINESS

A community shop means community control; it is a business that is owned, managed and staffed by the community where it is located and trades. The community makes the shop sustainable by providing finance and volunteer staff. The community is also the core customer base of the shop.

Supporting local food producers

From the 2 surveys completed in 2020 and 2023 you've told us that supporting local producers, providing fresh produce such as milk, fruit and vegetables and bread are important to this community.

Supporting local producers

Surrounded with some of the best farming land in the country with tasty produce on our doorstep the shop will look to build relationships with local producers and farmers.  This will help reduce the carbon impact of our foods, build a stonger community beyond our village as well as increase the freshness and tastiness of the produce.

Potential for a Local Delivery Service

Sometimes it's hard to get to the store so the Hub Committee has been discussing the potential for adding in a delivery scheme utilising an electric bike or van.

A space for the community.  A hub of activity.

More than just a shop

Looking to build on the range of activities already hosted by the local  community we envision the space to have the capacity to etc as a hub for local information.  A meeting place, somewhere to rest and chat and see what is going on n our village.
